Banu Abd Shams (Arabic: بنو عبد شمس) refers to a clan within the Meccan tribe of Quraish. The clan names itself from Abd Shams ibn Abd Manaf, the son of Abd Manaf ibn Qusai and brother of Hashim, the great-grandfather of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
The clan acts as the parent clan to Banu Umayya sub-clan, the widely known Umayyad dynasty which ruled as the second Arab caliphate (661–750) established after Muhammad's death. In pre-Islamic times, the clan's chieftain Utba ibn Rabi'ah's daughter Hind was married to Umayyad leader Abu Sufyan.
The clan has its descendants living even today in few cities in Central and Western Arabia.
